
Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP)
1.Meaning:-The Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) is a major credit-linked subsidy program launched by the Government of India. It was introduced to merge two schemes, namely, the Prime Minister’s Rojgar Yojana (PMRY) and the Rural Employment Generation Programme (REGP), with the goal of generating self-employment opportunities through the establishment of micro-enterprises in the non-farm sector by helping unemployed youth and traditional artisans.
2.Objective of PMEGP:-
- To generate employment opportunities in rural as well as urban areas through the setting up of new self-employment ventures/projects/micro enterprises.
- To bring together widely dispersed traditional artisans/rural and urban unemployed youth and give them self-employment opportunities to the extent possible, at their place.
- To provide continuous and sustainable employment to a large segment of traditional and prospective artisans and rural and urban unemployed youth in the country, thereby helping in the reduction of unemployment.
- To increase wage-earning capacity of artisans and contribute to increase in the growth rate of rural and urban employment.
